Los Angeles vs San Francisco in 2026: Complete Cost of Living, Housing, Jobs and Lifestyle Comparison
Los Angeles and San Francisco are both major California cities, but in 2026 they offer very different experiences when it comes to housing, rent, transportation, jobs, taxes, education and lifestyle. The biggest difference is housing. Zillow's August 2026 data puts the typical Los Angeles home value at $929,572, compared with $1,424,767 in San Francisco. At the same time, Zillow reports average asking rents of about $2,778 in Los Angeles and $4,682 in San Francisco. But housing is only part of the story. Los Angeles has a much larger, spread-out metropolitan environment with major industries including entertainment, aerospace, logistics, healthcare and international trade. San Francisco is much more compact and remains closely connected to technology, startups, venture capital and AI.
