West Virginia - The Wild and Wonderful Mountain State

Today we explored West Virginia. It is a state in the USA that is completely covered with mountains and forests.

Basic Info

The capital and largest city of this state is Charleston. As of 2026, the population is about 1.7 million, which makes it one of the least populated states in the USA. It separated from Virginia on June 20, 1863, during the Civil War.

Geography

West Virginia is located in the eastern part of the USA, right in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains. Its total area is 24,229.76 square miles, making it the 41st largest state. It borders Virginia, Ohio, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky.

The state is almost entirely mountainous and is divided into two main regions:

a) Ridge and Valley Region (East): Home to the Allegheny Mountains with long ridges and deep valleys. Spruce Knob, the highest peak in the state at 4,863 feet, is located here.

b) Allegheny Plateau (West - 2/3 of the state): Most of the state lies here. It looks flat from above but is cut deeply by rivers, forming gorges up to 1,100 feet deep, like the famous New River Gorge.

Lowest point: Potomac River near Harpers Ferry - just 240 feet.

Rivers & Lakes

West Virginia is considered one of the best-drained states in the USA. There are no natural lakes; all lakes are man-made.

Main rivers are the Ohio River (forms the western border), Potomac, Kanawha, Monongahela, New, Gauley, Greenbrier, and Big Sandy. Limestone caves like Seneca Caverns and Smoke Hole Caverns have been formed by underground water.

Forests

Most of the area is mixed hardwood forest with oak, maple, beech, and pine. Higher elevations have boreal forests similar to northern climates.

There are 68 colleges/universities. Largest are WVU and Marshall. The state has 3 medical schools and 1 law school. Average tuition is $11,657/year. Literacy rate is 79.1% and high school graduation rate is a record high of 92.8%.
